Not everyone will be a candidate for whitening. If you have tooth-colored fillings, crowns, caps or bonding in your front teeth — the whitening process will not change the color of these materials, making them stand out in your newly whitened smile. In these cases, you may want to investigate other options, like veneers or bonding.
Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are glued to the front of your teeth. For teeth that are severely discolored, chipped or misshapen, they create a durable and pleasing smile. Veneers are difficult to stain, making them popular for people seeking a perfect smile. Porcelain veneers, which must first be created to fit your teeth in a dental laboratory, require two visits.
With bonding, a composite resin is used to restore chipped or broken teeth and fill in gaps to improve your smile. After applying a very mild etching solution that slightly roughs the surface of your teeth and allows the bonding material to adhere, your dental team will apply the resin, and then sculpts, colors and shapes it to provide a pleasing result. A high-intensity light hardens the material, which is then finely polished. The material can be matched to your natural tooth color.
Dental implants are a wonderful choice to restore your smile. Standard dental implants are fabricated teeth that are permanently attached to steel rod that has been anchored into the patient’s jaw bone. This is a multi-step procedure that can require multiple visits. For some patients, mini diameter implants may also be an option. With the mini-diameter implant procedure is minimally invasive and often the implant placement doesn’t result in prolonged bleeding or require a lengthy healing period. With mini-diameter implants, typically, you can usually eat comfortably that same afternoon, using your new, permanent teeth. If you are considering dental implants, ask Dr.Wilfong or a member of his care team to help determine which type is right for you.
